Troop 507 Statement of
Purpose
Hello, and welcome to Troop 507, Boy Scouts of America! The
troop was established with a basic philosophy that learning would best happen by
being in an environment of having fun. This philosophy is a driving force
behind the activities we plan throughout the year, and has been proven to be
sound with the degree of advancements and merit badges earned between each Court
of Honor. We operate on four primary principles: learning while having fun,
achievement (personal and group), developing leaders, and family
participation.
Troop 507 has one of the highest rates of achievement including
earning Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout. This is in part a result of the
philosophy of learning. It also, however, has to do with our philosophy of how
leadership is developed. We believe that training forms a foundation, and we
support participation in junior leader training programs. However, training
alone is not sufficient to develop the skills for quality leadership. True
leaders are ones who inspire others.
In order to reach a point of inspiring others, it is necessary
for the developing leader to first reach a level of knowledge and
self-confidence as to make him comfortable to step into a position of helping
and teaching others. They also then have to learn who they are at the core of
their being and stand in their integrity. By obtaining these skills, the role of
leading others to their inspiration
(and they let you know!) should come naturally. Bringing youth to this point is
more complicated and requires more commitment than simple training of skills and
then letting them lead. It takes the basic Boy Scout Handbook “E.D.G.E”
(Explain, Demonstrate,Guide,
Enable) principle to the deepest level for which it was intended. It becomes
“inspirational leadership” inspired by who they have become. Our adult and youth
leaders are dedicated to this process.
Finally, Troop 507 has always encouraged and embraced the
participation, input, and interaction of all family members associated with the
boys of the troop. All who are interested are invited to attend any function in
whatever way they are compelled. In this manner, we operate as a functional and
inclusive family -- teaching cooperation, communication, and issue resolution
in the process.
By acting upon these principles and methods, we believe that
Troop 507 offers the opportunity for our youth to become leaders as well as
becoming well-prepared for life. This is what Boy Scout’s founder Lord
Baden-Powell set as Scouting’s guiding goal: “Be
Prepared.”
